The soot patterns around the door and the pillars have been caused by the combined effects of wind and pollution. The inner faces of the pillars have accumulated dirt particles from the air over time, which adhere to the column surface when it is damp. They are sheltered by the porch from the driving wind and rain that continually 'washes' and cleans the outside of the columns, thus preventing dirt from accumulating there (the acidity of the rain makes this particularly effective). This scouring process has also made the outside surfaces of the pillars much rougher than the inner faces.
