Masonry Window Sill

This old mason knew how to keep rain and snow melt water out of the wall and from running down along its surface. Note how the sandstone sill extends beyond the wall, how its end forms a dam and, as a second line of defence, grooves have been hewn into the masonry to minimise flow of wind-driven water along the sill.
